Which Way Should My TV Aerial Point?

Your TV aerial should point directly at the Freeview transmitter that serves your area — not simply the nearest one. Find yours with a postcode checker, or look at which way your neighbours' aerials face. The rods should be horizontal for most main transmitters and vertical for most local relays. That’s the short answer. The rest of this guide covers how to find your transmitter, how to read an aerial’s orientation, and why “strongest signal” and “right transmitter” aren’t always the same thing.

Aerials point at transmitters — so which is yours?

Freeview reaches UK homes from around 80 main transmitters and over a thousand smaller relays (low-power fill-in transmitters serving valleys and shadowed areas the main stations can’t reach). A Yagi aerial (the classic rooftop ladder-of-rods design) is highly directional: it receives strongly from the direction it points and weakly from everywhere else. Point it 20–30 degrees off its transmitter and you can lose half the signal or more.

Three ways to find your transmitter:

  1. Use a postcode checker. Our postcode checker tells you which transmitter serves your address. The BBC and Freeview run official reception predictors that do the same and also list the frequencies in use.
  2. Look at your neighbours’ roofs. The oldest trick in the trade, and still a good one. If every aerial on your street points the same way, that’s almost certainly the right bearing — dozens of previous installers have already done the survey for you. Be careful on streets where aerials point in two different directions: that usually means the area sits between two transmitters (or between a main station and a relay) and different houses get better results from different ones.

Horizontal or vertical? Reading polarisation

UK transmitters broadcast with either horizontal or vertical polarisation (the orientation of the radio wave — your aerial’s elements must match it to receive efficiently). The rule of thumb:

  • Main transmitters are almost all horizontally polarised — the aerial’s rods (elements) sit flat, parallel to the ground.
  • Relays are almost all vertically polarised — the rods stand upright.

So you can read any rooftop at a glance: rods flat means the house is on a main transmitter; rods upright means it’s on a relay. A mismatched aerial — horizontal rods pointed at a vertical relay — loses a large fraction of the signal even when the bearing is perfect. There are exceptions: Rowridge on the Isle of Wight unusually transmits both polarisations, and vertical is often the better choice there because it’s less prone to co-channel interference from France.

Why the strongest transmitter isn’t always the right one

Reception predictors sometimes show two or three transmitters serving your postcode, and it’s tempting to pick whichever promises the strongest signal. Two reasons to think harder:

Regional news. Each transmitter carries a specific BBC and ITV region. On the Yorkshire–Lancashire border, for instance, Emley Moor gives you Look North and Winter Hill gives you North West Tonight. Homes near regional boundaries often deliberately point at the “weaker” transmitter to get the news, weather and local coverage they actually want.

Relay vs main. Relays exist because the main transmitter’s signal is blocked locally — but relays carry fewer multiplexes (MUXes — bundles of channels sharing one frequency). Most relays broadcast only the three public-service MUXes, roughly 20 channels, while main transmitters carry six or more, roughly 75 channels. If your house can receive the main transmitter adequately, pointing at it instead of the local relay gets you the full channel line-up. A good installer will check both options rather than defaulting to the relay.

Line-of-sight and obstructions

UHF television signals travel essentially in straight lines. They’ll penetrate weather and scatter a little around obstacles, but hills, dense trees and large buildings between you and the transmitter all cost signal. This is why:

  • Aerials go on the roof, on the transmitter-facing side where possible — height clears local obstructions (how high does an aerial need to be?).
  • A house in a valley may need a relay even though the main transmitter is closer on the map.
  • Reception can worsen in summer (trees in leaf) or after new building work nearby, with no fault in your system at all.

Checking and fixing alignment

Without a meter, you’re working blind but not helpless. Note your TV’s signal strength and quality readings on the tuning screen (our signal strength guide explains how), have someone watch them while you very slowly swing the aerial around the expected bearing, and lock the clamp at the peak. It’s slow, the TV’s readings lag several seconds behind reality, and working on a roof without proper access equipment is genuinely dangerous — which is why we don’t recommend DIY realignment anywhere you can’t reach safely from a ladder to a gable or from inside a loft.

With a meter, the job takes minutes. Installers use a signal meter or spectrum analyser at the aerial itself, reading strength and quality (including bit error rate) in real time on every MUX while adjusting bearing, polarisation and clamp tension. That’s the difference between “looks about right” and verified.

After storms is when most alignment problems appear: a gust rotates the aerial a few degrees on a loosened clamp, and the picture goes from perfect to pixellated. A realignment visit is a standard aerial repair job and costs far less than a new installation; a full new install typically runs £150–£250.

One caution: if the aerial has moved once, the clamp or mast may be worn or undersized, and it will move again. A proper repair re-tightens or replaces the hardware rather than just nudging the aerial back.
