Storm-Damaged TV Aerial: What to Do (and Who Pays)

Safety first — genuinely
Two rules before anything else:
If the aerial is hanging, dangling or swinging, keep people away from below it. A UHF aerial with a metre of mast attached weighs enough to cause serious injury falling from a two-storey roof, and it rarely falls straight down — wind takes it sideways. If it’s hanging over a pavement, footpath or a neighbour’s property, treat it as urgent: cordon off what you can and call an installer the same day. If it’s tangled in overhead power lines, don’t touch anything — call your electricity network operator on 105.
Don’t go up a ladder in wind, and preferably don’t go up at all. The gusts that moved the aerial are usually still around the day after the storm. Professional installers work with roof ladders, proper anchoring, and the judgement to postpone in bad conditions; the annual toll of DIY ladder falls in the UK is grim enough that the Health and Safety Executive publishes warnings about exactly this scenario. Is it storm damage, or coincidence?
TV faults that show up after a storm aren’t always caused by it — sometimes a cable that had been corroding for years finally gives up on a windy night, and sometimes the transmitter itself was off-air for storm-related engineering work. Before assuming your hardware took the hit, check whether neighbours on the same transmitter — Winter Hill, Emley Moor, Mendip, Belmont or whichever serves your area — have also lost channels. If it’s just you, look up from the ground and compare your aerial with the neighbours’:
- Misalignment — the aerial points a different way from every other aerial nearby. Even a 20–30° rotation can drop enough signal to lose whole multiplexes (MUXes — bundles of channels sharing one frequency), which is why storm damage often shows up as some channels missing rather than a blank screen.
- Rotated mast — the aerial looks intact but the whole pole has twisted in its clamps. Same symptom, slightly bigger fix, because the clamps have lost their grip and need re-torquing or replacing.
- Snapped lashing wire — chimney-mounted aerials are held by a lashing kit (a steel wire tensioned around the chimney with a corner bracket). If the wire snaps or the bracket pulls out, the whole assembly leans or swings. This is the “dangling aerial” scenario and the most urgent.
- Bent or missing elements — the short cross-pieces along the aerial boom. A few bent elements degrade performance modestly; a snapped boom or missing reflector (the grid at the back) usually means replacement over repair.
- Water ingress after driven rain — storms push rain horizontally into places it never normally reaches: cracked cable outer sheath, a perished connection box on the aerial, an old wall entry point. Who pays: home insurance
TV aerials fixed to the building are normally covered under the buildings section of a home insurance policy, and storm damage is one of the standard insured perils. Most insurers define a storm by wind speed thresholds (commonly gusts around 47+ mph); a named storm passing through comfortably qualifies.
Whether claiming is worth it is a different question. Work through it in this order:

- Check your excess. Many buildings policies carry a £100–£350 excess. If the excess meets or exceeds the repair quote — which it very often does for aerial work — a claim gains you nothing.
- Weigh the premium effect. Even small claims can nudge future premiums and count against no-claims records on some policies.
The realistic summary: insurance matters when the storm damage extends beyond the aerial — mast through a roof tile, damaged chimney, aerial fallen onto a car or conservatory. For an aerial alone, most households are better off simply paying for the repair. Who pays: landlord vs tenant
In rented property, an aerial that came with the tenancy is part of the equipment the landlord supplied, and keeping it in working order sits on the landlord’s side of the ledger — storm damage is nobody’s misuse, so there’s no basis for charging the tenant. Temporary fixes while you wait
If a repair is a few days away, you can usually get some TV back without touching the roof:
- An indoor aerial near a window facing the transmitter will often pull in the main channels in decent-signal areas — a £15 stopgap, not a solution.

How installers put it right
A professional storm repair is usually quick, and it’s worth knowing what a good job looks like:
- Realignment with a meter. The installer re-points the aerial using a signal meter reading actual strength and error rate — not by eyeballing the neighbours’ aerials — then re-torques the clamps.
- A new lashing kit where the wire snapped: fresh galvanised wire, new corner brackets, tensioned properly around the chimney. Reusing a stretched wire is a bodge.
- A cranked mast or repositioning where the original mounting was the weakness — for example moving off a crumbling chimney onto a gable-end bracket with a cranked (offset-bent) mast to clear the roofline.
- Sealed connections. Any junction exposed to weather gets a self-amalgamating tape or gel-filled seal so the next bout of driven rain stays out of the cable.
Preventing the next one
Aerials don’t blow over at random — storms find the weak point that was already there. The main culprits: corroded ten-year-old lashing wire, oversized “high-gain” aerials on slender masts (more surface area for the wind to push against than the mounting was rated for), and rusted clamp bolts that had lost their grip.
