Do I Need a New Aerial for 4K or HD TV?
No — there is no such thing as an HD aerial or a 4K aerial. An aerial receives radio frequencies; it has no idea what resolution the pictures are. If your current aerial delivers a reliable Freeview signal, it will deliver HD too, provided your TV or box has a DVB-T2 tuner. 4K isn't broadcast over the air at all — it arrives via the internet through Freely and streaming apps. Why “HD aerial” is a marketing term, not a product
A TV aerial is a passive piece of metal shaped to collect UHF radio signal (the band between roughly 470 and 700MHz that carries UK terrestrial television) and pass it down a cable. What travels on that signal — standard definition, high definition, radio, data — is decided by the broadcaster’s encoding and your receiver’s tuner. The aerial is frequency-dependent, not resolution-dependent. It either collects the multiplex (MUX — the bundle of channels sharing one broadcast frequency) cleanly or it doesn’t; it cannot tell a 1980s repeat from a live HD broadcast, and it treats both identically.
So the aerials sold as “HD ready”, “Full HD” or “4K” are ordinary aerials with extra words on the box. Some are perfectly good ordinary aerials. But the label describes nothing about the product, in the same way a “broadband-ready” kettle would describe nothing about the kettle. The Confederation of Aerial Industries (CAI — the UK trade body for aerial and satellite installers) has been pointing this out for as long as the labels have existed.
Digital reception is also binary in a way that helps here: with a digital signal you get either a perfect picture, a picture breaking into blocks, or nothing. There’s no “slightly better picture” to be had from a fancier aerial once reception is solid. If your Freeview is stable today, an aerial upgrade will not sharpen it.
HD on Freeview: it’s the tuner, not the aerial
Freeview HD channels are broadcast using DVB-T2 (the second-generation Digital Video Broadcasting Terrestrial standard), a more efficient transmission system than the original DVB-T used for standard-definition MUXes. Receiving them requires a DVB-T2 tuner — which every TV sold in the UK for well over a decade has built in, as does any Freeview HD or Freeview Play box.
Both generations travel on the same UHF frequencies through the same aerial. If your TV is so old it lacks a T2 tuner, the fix is a £30–£50 set-top box, not roof work. 4K on Freeview: not broadcast, and not planned to be
There are no 4K channels broadcast on UK terrestrial television, from Crystal Palace, Sutton Coldfield or anywhere else, and none are scheduled. Terrestrial spectrum is too constrained — the 700MHz clearance in 2020 handed the top of the TV band to mobile networks, and the remaining spectrum is fully occupied carrying the existing ~75 Freeview channels.
4K from the public service broadcasters arrives a different way: over the internet. Freely, launched in 2024 by the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5, delivers live channels over broadband to smart TVs, with terrestrial broadcast as the fallback — and IP delivery is where free-to-air UHD content appears, alongside the 4K on iPlayer, Netflix, Prime Video and the rest. No aerial of any shape or price brings 4K down from a transmitter, because there is no 4K up there to bring down.
That’s not a reason to abandon the aerial: broadcast Freeview is guaranteed until at least 2034, needs no broadband, and doesn’t buffer. It’s simply a reason not to buy hardware for a signal that doesn’t exist.
When an old aerial genuinely does need replacing
None of the above means every old aerial is fine. Legitimate reasons to replace one:

Notice what’s on that list: frequency match, physical condition, build quality, alignment. Resolution appears nowhere. If channels have vanished or the picture breaks up, work through why your aerial won’t work and Freeview signal disappeared before buying anything — the cause is as often the cable, a connection or a retune as the aerial itself.
What actually improves your picture
If the goal is a better-looking, more reliable picture on a modern TV, spend attention here:
- Signal quality with margin. Solid MER (Modulation Error Ratio — the quality measurement that predicts whether digital pictures hold together) and low error rates, verified with a meter, with headroom for bad weather. See how to check your signal strength.

- The TV’s own settings. On a 4K set, most visible “sharpness” differences between houses come from the panel and its processing settings, not the aerial.

Sales tactics to watch for
The “HD aerial” myth persists because it sells roof work. Treat these lines with suspicion:
- “You’ll need a new aerial for the HD channels.” False, as above. HD needs a T2 tuner; your aerial neither knows nor cares.
- “This one’s 4K-compatible.” Meaningless. There is no terrestrial 4K to be compatible with.
- “Digital aerial upgrade.” All UK TV has been digital since 2012. Every functioning aerial is a “digital aerial”.
- A diagnosis without a measurement. Nobody can tell you an aerial needs replacing from the pavement. If there’s no signal meter involved, there’s no diagnosis — a theme we expand on in the cheap installation myth.
- Doorstep urgency. Reputable installers quote after assessment and don’t need an answer on the doorstep. CAI membership is one useful (though not the only) marker of a legitimate trader.
A fair summary for the doorstep: if your Freeview works reliably, no aerial purchase will improve your picture; if it doesn’t work reliably, the fix starts with a measurement, not a product.
